Features

The exact set of features we implement will be based on interviews with teachers. Of course, being a teacher myself, I have my own personal wish list:

  • Individual student accounts through which students can group themselves (or be grouped) for projects, submit the URLs of their blogs (so their posts can be automatically checked), access protected documents, and publish their work for their peers to read.
  • A unit planning tool, allowing teachers to work backwards from learning targets toward assessments of mastery, then planning backward to the scaffolding lessons that will get students there. These units will be mapped onto a school calendar, automatically generating a homework calendar and corresponding gradebook entries, if desired. Teachers will be able to publish their units within a school community or publicly.
  • A vocabulary system allowing teachers to use a prescribed set of vocabulary words, or (my preference) allowing students to submit new words they encounter in their reading, to form dynamic vocabulary lists. This will include automatically generated example sentences (culled from news sites), as well as quizzes and tests which can be automatically graded.
  • And lots more!

Many schools don't have a centralized learning management system. Winedark Web will also provide:

  • An easy teacher homepage for posting homework, announcements, handouts, and lesson plans. Here's my current teacher page; I would like to replicate its features.
  • A straightforward gradebook allowing students and parents to monitor their progress and teachers to view meaningful representations of assessment data.
